We Can Wait

By: Whitney Todd

"I can't wait until summer"

"I can't wait until this test is over"

"I can't wait to find love"

"I can't wait to graduate"

"I can't wait for this cold weather to end"

We can't wait.

Why is it that we all can't wait until something is over or has passed by? I am a culprit of this issue I won't lie, but maybe this is what is decreasing our quality of life. We wish away time, we want time to go by fast, we want a part of our life to end. Just because something is hard or boring doesn't mean we should sweep it under the rug and get over it quick. We shouldn't be living a life where we are always looking forward to the weekend, or looking forward to greener grass.

When we are constantly looking ahead, rushing and pushing through the crowd to what we think is the light at the end of the tunnel, we may be passing by our true destination. Our greed and craving for the future is the true thief of living life to the fullest.

The time is going to pass one way or another, you can either spend it soaking in every tear, every laugh, every memory or spend it with blinders on, sweeping the things you don't want to remember under the rug and picking and choosing what you want to learn and live through. The choice is yours.

The future is exciting, we have every right to look forward to something that motivates us, but until it comes, receive what life has to offer. We are all so good at preparing for life, but we lack in fully living lifeDon't get caught up in being obsessed with ”someday.” Stop wishing, stop waiting, start doing.

We are human: we are going to look back and we most certainly are going to look forward. If you are going to look back, do it forgivingly. What's in the past is in the past, all you can do with the past is learn and smile from it. If you are going to look forward, do it prayerfully, as Maya Angelou would say.

Show up. Show up with that messy hair, chaotic life and no makeup on. As long as you show up and you are all there.

Slow down and make the tea. Take that bubble bath. Take that nap (say it for the ladies in the back). Go on that run. Stop and pick that pretty flower. Slow down and live.

Turn those "can't waits" into "can waits." Life will have a whole new meaning. Man is this quest difficult, but once you figure out how to do this for yourself, you will see all the open doors life has to offer.

Be present, it is the only moment right now that matters.

"The trick is to enjoy life. Don't wish away your days, waiting for better ones ahead." - Marjorie Pay Hinckley
